From Negative to Positive, Transforming Our Perception of Social Media!

Written by YogurtTop

Imagine a world where your eyes are glued to your phone, waiting for the engagement to kick in on your newest Instagram photo, constantly checking on its progress and judging whether you’re receiving enough likes for the duration of time it has been uploaded for. Sounds stupid, right? Well, we no longer need to imagine this scenario, because it is very much a reality.

Social media is place filled with so much positivity, but unfortunately, just as much negativity. We have all stumbled across an account on Instagram that looks too perfect to be true, which more often than not, is the case! We’re so absorbed by what we see online that we don’t often take a step back and realise that these influencers we see on Instagram are far from reality. We ALL have our down days, which is one of the most important things to remember when comparing our lives to those on Instagram. People are only ever going to post what they want others to see, and can you blame them? We are all human after all, and we all want to be viewed in a positive light to our peers and followers.

The beauty of social media, and the thing that most people forget is that you can choose what you see. You can unfollow Instagram accounts that make you feel as though your life isn’t perfect because you don’t go on holiday 4 times a year, or your clothes aren’t perfectly matched every single day. If it makes you feel down or insecure, please unfollow.

I personally think it’s time to start viewing social media in a positive light and cancelling out the negativity it brings. Without social media, we wouldn’t be able to stay connected with those that mean the most to us. We can watch our family and friends grow in age, achievements and milestones with such ease, just by a simple Facebook update or Instagram post. Life is too short to focus on the negatives, so let’s take a new approach. Together we can break down the existing connotations associated with social media and focus on what makes us happy, because no amount of Instagram likes will ever defeat the true meaning of happiness, am I right? #FarFromReality
